The objective of Baltic Gas is to promote thedevelopment of a common gas market in the Baltic Sea region. Theactivities of BASREC group are focused on eliminating administrativebarriers hampering such development. The meeting in Warsaw was intendedto encourage in-depth discussion on competition, security of supply andsustainable development of the gas market in the Baltic Sea region.

Following the accession of Poland, Lithuania, Latviaand Estonia to the European Union in 2004, the market integration hasbeen driven by a common system of legal norms. For this reason, amongthe speakers participating in the seminar there was a representative ofthe European Commission, Jean Andre Barbosa, who presented thedocuments published by the European Commission in January 2006,referred to as the Third Energy Package and outlined the challengesahead of the Baltic States in connection with the implementation of thepackage.

The participants accepted reports of two permanentworking groups of Baltic Gas and BASREC, which discuss the Challengesin Gas Market Development and Security of Supply.

The presence of PGNiG in Baltic Gas offers anopportunity to take part in the development of documents, which are keyin promoting the preferable solutions for the gas sector companies. Italso provides a platform for the dialog with other companies operatingin this region that are members of this association. Being a part ofBaltic Gas, the company can promote solutions supporting development ofgas infrastructure and integration of the national markets within theBaltic Sea region. The goal is to strengthen the security of supply andcreate a Pan-European gas system combining shared transport and storageinfrastructure. 

The promotion of new investments in the region is aparticularly topical question today, when a direct connection with gasfields in Scandinavia is one of the elements in the diversification ofthe natural gas supply to Poland.
