29.04.2009 Comment on decision to suspend Skanled project
Despite the PGNiG SA's efforts to continue the Skanled project, on 29 April 2009 the consortium members decided suspend the project. The reasons include the changed macroeconomic situation and the lack of possibility to secure deliveries of products to be transported by the gas pipeline.
Today's decision was preceded by withdrawals of a number of, mostly Scandinavian, companies from this, initially planned as international, project.
The implementation of the project is beyond the financial and organisational means of PGNiG on its own.
Due to the today's decision of the participants in the Skanled project, PGNiG expects OGP GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. and Energinet.dk to provide information on further efforts related to the implementation of the Baltic Pipe project, which is to operate as a two-way connection between Denmark and Poland.
Furthermore, we would like to highlight that PGNiG has no intentions of withdrawing from expanding its operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf related to the development and exploitation of deposits covered by licences held by PGNiG Norway.
Presently, PGNiG SA intends to focus on the implementation of other diversification projects, aimed at providing national energy security. On 15 April 2009, a Master Agreement was signed with Qatargas, which opens the road to signing of a Sales and Purchase Agreement. PGNiG and Qatargas are involved in talks on finalisation of the abovementioned contract.
