26.07.2018 Change in household gas tariff

The President of the Energy Regulatory Office has approved a 5.9% increase in the price of gas fuel for PGNiG Obrót Detaliczny customers. The subscription fee and the distribution fee, which was reduced by 7.37% in March 2018, will remain unchanged. The change in the tariff is due to rising gas, oil and energy prices on global markets. The new tariff will be effective  from August 10th to December 31st 2018.

After the new tariff takes effect, monthly gas bills, which apart from gas fuel prices include distribution and subscription fees, will go up by an average of 3.6%. Nevertheless, household gas bills remain on average  8% lower than at the end of 2015, PGNiG having repeatedly lowered gas prices over the last three years.

Relative to gas prices as at the end of 2015, from early 2016 to late 2018 an average household will have saved:

  • on gas consumed to prepare meals – approximately PLN 60,
  • on gas consumed to heat water – approximately PLN 276,
  • on gas consumed to heat a house or flat – approximately PLN 860.

The Company applied for approval to amend its tariff because of the rising prices of gas it buys on exchange markets. The upward trend in gas prices on exchange markets, both in Poland and across Europe, has been partly attributable to increasing oil prices and growing tensions in global trade as a result of higher import duties between the USA, China and the European Union.

The last six months alone saw an approximately 9.3% increase in crude oil prices, driven partly by sharp oil production cuts primarily in Venezuela and Libya as well as in Nigeria and Angola, and by sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran, which will come into force as of November 4th 2018 and may, in practice, prevent other countries, including EU member states, from purchasing Iranian crude.
